In a season where the W's have been tough to come by, Methuen got an easy one yesterday. Newton South forfeited their game with the Rangers due to a "scheduling conflict," although their website had the same date and time listed as Methuen's.

The Lawrence boys soccer team picked up what is believed to be the first Merrimack Valley Conference victory in 10 years, a 3-0 triumph over Methuen.

"It's moving in the right direction," third-year coach Don Sheldon said of the program. "Every year we're improving, we're more competitive."

Methuen notched its first win of the season, 2-0 over Chelmsford. Jeremy Fieldhouse and Kevin Dorgan each scored a goal.

Newburyport appears to have found its stride beating Methuen, 5-1, and scoring 12 goals in the Clippers past two games.

Tyler Stotz was the catalyst for the stout attack scoring the third goal and setting up two others. Tom Svirsky also had a solid game with a goal and an assist as did Connor Lynch with two goals. Yazid Eideh scored the last Clipper goal, and Mark Bajko also had an assist.

Dracut edged Methuen 1-0. John Mosley and Eric Bajor played well for the Rangers.

Methuen fell to Chelmsford 2-0.
