Hard-luck Sachems ousted

Stoneham beat Pentucket in double-overtime, 3-2, on a goal by Zach Daly off a corner kick.

"We hit the crossbar in the first overtime," lamented coach Christian Langlois. "We had a ton of chances. We played some of the best soccer we played all season but the ball just wouldn't come in and their keeper came up with some big saves."

Newburyport 2, Pentucket 2

Newburyport qualified for the state tournament with a tie against Pentucket in a thrilling ALS Cup match, 2-2. However, wanting to provide a winner for one team to take home the cup, the Sachems won in a shootout, 4-3.

Pentucket (8-5-2) clinched its third state tournament berth in the last five years by overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit. James Costello tallied a goal and an assist for the Sachems. Gary Lane added a goal. Brian Clevesy had an assist.

Pentucket 2, Rockport 1

 Pentucket took a 1-0 lead into the half before Rockport (3-7-5) junior tri-captain and forward Michael Emerson received a nice through ball from freshman center back A.J. Burnham and tied it up. Unfortunately, the Sachems got the game-winner with 11 minutes left and the Vikings had chances but couldn't convert.

 Ben Stasiuk came up huge for Pentucket with his first varsity goal off an assist from James Costello as Pentucket respounded with a much better performance than the team's last game to beat Ipswich, 2-1.

Pentucket conintued its hot streak as Evan Miller scored the game-winner nearly 10 minutes from time over a strong Hamilton-Wenham team. Brian Cormier had an assist and Joe Casey made several big stops.

The familiar names got the job done for Pentucket against a formidable Division 1 opponent in Central Catholic as Brian Clevesy combined with Jake Buzzell to score the game's only goal. However, with five seconds remaining in the game Sachem keeper Joe Casey made the save of the match stuffing a Central player from five yards out just before time to preserve the win.

Brian Clevesy scored the lone goal for Pentucket (3-4-2) on a penalty kick with five minutes left. Joe Casey made seven saves for the Sachems.

"We now know we can play with any team in the state," Pentucket coach Christian Langlois said. "We had a lot of shots on goal and a couple plays where we built the ball up nicely and couldn't get a shot off."
