Rangers on top of MVC heap

Methuen's girls basketball team easily handled Dracut, 71-36, to clinch the Merrimack Valley Conference Small title. Lindsay Pare, the Rangers' only senior, made Senior Night special with 13 points. Rashidat Agboola was fierce on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds in limited action to go with a game-high 16 points.

Sophomores step up

Methuen downed Cambridge 70-67, but it got interesting along the way. With starters in foul trouble in the first half, junior varsity call-ups Rebecca Caterino, Heather Trepanier and Danielle Grenier controlled the tempo and limited damage when called upon. Freshman Becca Costa ran the point well in the waning minutes of the first half and ended up with 10 points. Rashidat Agboola was unstoppable, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 boards, and Ashley LeBlanc added 16 points.

Natalie Gomez-Martinez hit a game-high four 3-pointers as the Andover girls basketball defeated Methuen, 79-64. In addition to her game-high 28 points, Gomez finished with 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Nicole Boudreau dropped 17 points on the Rangers to go alone with nine rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Wild win for the Rangers

It took four overtimes, but the Methuen girls basketball team (finally) topped Tewksbury, 76-74. The Rangers improved to 4-4 thanks to the extraordinary effort.

"We'd gone ahead several times during regulation and they just kept coming back," coach Karen McLaughlin said. "It came right down to the wire. Each overtime, they went up, and then we would come back. It was just crazy, like survival of the fittest."
