Sweeney shines on Valentine's Day

METHUEN — It was turning into the St. Valentine’s Day shootout, but then Casey Sweeney stepped in.

“Coach wanted me to keep it simple,” said Sweeney. “I listened to what he had to say and things worked out.” Almost everything worked out for Sweeney as the sophomore took on the role of playmaker with a goal and four assists to drive Haverhill past Methuen, 6-2.

Answering the call

With starting goaltender Jonathan Borden missing the past three games due to illness, the Rangers have called on junior Pat O'Leary early and often. O'Leary has racked up a total of 93 saves in his past three starts, including 35 in Methuen's 2-0 loss to Boston Latin yesterday.

Rangers run wild

Methuen cashed in on a big 3-point night from Dan Loughlin (2 goals, 1 assist) to defeat struggling Cambridge, 4-0. Pat Fleming recorded a pair of helpers, and Brandon McDermott and Pat Lucey each scored a goal. Jonathan Borden made 21 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Methuen makes strides

Jonathan Borden is finally recieving the support he's been hoping for. The netminder made 38 saves as Methuen earned its second win of the season, 3-1 over Nashua North. That doubles the Rangers' win total of a season ago, and tied their total from two years ago.

Finally, a win!

After dropping five games by one goal, the Methuen hockey team prevailed by one goal, 2-1, for its first victory of the season. Mike Lussier got the game-winner on assists from Danny Loughlin and Pat Lucey in the middle of the third period and goalie Jonathan Borden held Lowell at bay the rest of the way. Eric Dalrymple scored Methuen's first goal.

Boston Latin 2, Methuen 1

Methuen fell to 0-6 after dropping its fifth one-goal decision this season. This one came close to a tie but Boston Latin scored with 30 seconds remaining. Mike Lussier scored the lone goal for the Rangers.

Methuen's comeback bid falls short

In spite of trailing 4-0 entering the final period, the Methuen boys hockey team nearly pulled off an epic comeback before ultimately falling to Walpole, 4-3. Dan Loughlin (2 goals, assist), Mike Lussier (goal, assist) and Tyler Murphy (assist) pulled the Rangers back into it, chipping away at the Walpole lead until just a single goal would tie the game. Unfortunately, they were unable to score the equalizer and the Rangers took their third one-goal loss of the season. Jonathan Borden recorded 23 saves in the loss.
