Feeling blue: Swampscott topples Pentucket in D-3 North final

BOSTON – Pentucket senior Kirsten Daamen couldn’t help but shed a few tears.

Second-seeded Swampscott had just defeated the top-seeded Sachems 61-46 in yesterday’s Division 3 North final. Her high school career ended here at Emmanuel College’s Yawkey Center, not at TD Banknorth Garden, where her team played in the state semifinals in both 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Trailing 35-31 entering the fourth, Pentucket erupted for 21 points in the final frame to secure the 52-47 win over Triton. Kirsten Daamen led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Andi Attenasio was close behind with 13 points, and Ashley Viselli chipped in 12 for the 18-1 Sachems.

In addition to scoring 14 points, Kirsten Daamen swatted away 8 shots as she never let North Andover establish an inside presence in Pentucket's 52-35 win. Ashley Viselli dropped a game-high 16 points (four 3-pointers) and added 7 steals, and Erin McNamara had 7 points and 8 assists. 1,000-point scorer Nicole Zahoruiko led the Knights in scoring with 14 points.

The Sachems (13-1) led 20-2 after one quarter and 29-2 at halftime. Eleven of the 13 Sachem players scored points.

"I couldn't be prouder of the girls," Pentucket coach John McNamara said. "They managed the game well. They gave up individual statistics to give other teammates opportunities."

Pentucket 48, Hamilton-Wenham 21

In the first night of back-to-back games, Pentucket outscored Hamilton-Wenham 17-0 in the first quarter and cruised to victory from there. Kirsten Daamen had 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Ashley Viselli had 12 points. The Sachems will travel to Notre Dame of Hingham (9-3) a Division 2 team, tomorrow night.
