A four-run first inning opened the door for North Reading who held on to beat host Ipswich 6-5 to win the Cape Ann League title. Caitlin Reilly had three hits for the Hornets and Casey Chapman threw a complete game.

Newburyport 5, Ipswich 3

Lindsey Tomasz hit a walk-off grand slam for Newburyport (10-4), clinching the team's first state tournament appearance in 10 years. Tomasz (3 for 3) smashed a shot that soared over the head of Ipswich's four outfielders, who had been repositioned in a defensive shift. Madison Stanton, Rachel Notargiacomo and Cassandra Davis scored on the homer. Rachel Webster was 3 for 3. Molly Rowe earned the victory, pitching two innings in relief of Beth Castantini.

Tyne Darke (double, run) and Sarah Dickinson both went 1 for 3 for the Sachems.

Dynamite debut

Gwen Vozeolas couldn't have designed a better debut. In her first varsity game, the freshman was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and made a great running catch in the outfield in North Andover's 10-8 loss to Ipswich.

Despite being limited to a single hit, the Vikings (1-4) were able to beat Ipswich yesterday, 1-0. Mikaela Strangie (1 for 2, double, run) scored the game-winner on a wild pitch, and Marion Dulleau (7 IP, 3 hits, 1 walk, 10 Ks) pitched a gem for the win.
