TAUNTON — If the MIAA would have it in their hearts to allow a “do-over” in the state tournament season, the Methuen High girls softball team would like to have another shot at the bottom of the first inning.

The Methuen High softball team picked a pretty good time to play its most complete game of 2015. After yesterday’s convincing win, 7-1 over Medford High, the Lady Rangers can claim to be the best team north of Boston after taking the Div. 1 North title game at Martin Field. It was an almost perfect performance by Methuen: n The pitcher, Kayleigh Forgetta, was on her game, with four strikeouts, no walks and allowing seven hits. n Eight different players had hits. n The last three in the lineup — Maddie Adames, Heather McLaughlin and Morgan Adames — ­got on base seven times in eight official at bats. n No Methuen errors. n Junior catcher Kat LeFebre broke open the game with a two-run triple to right center that went to wall. “Wow, that’s what I’d call a total team effort,” said Methuen coach Jason Smith. “We’re a tough team to beat when we get contributions like that from so many players.” After playing a game of survival against Westford Academy on Thursday, a game which ended on an appeal play in Methuen’s favor, the Rangers were sharper and crisper from the opening pitch. In fact, Methuen’s pitcher, Forgetta, was among those who brought her “A-game” to Lowell. She faced only one batter over the minimum through four innings while the Methuen offense slowly did its damage. Methuen got one run in the second inning when senior Maddie Adames doubled and scored on a throwing error. Then fellow senior Nina Correia, who had three hits on Thursday, smashed a triple to left-center scoring senior Kelly Blackwell, who singled. Methuen put the game away in the fourth as Medford began to tire as the Rangers loaded the bases on a walk, error and hit-by-pitch. Amanda Conway got one run home on a sacrifice fly before catcher Kat LeFebre ripped a triple to the wall, scoring two more runs. “I just hit it hard and saw it got past the outfielders,” said LeFebre, one of the few juniors on the team. “And I just kept running and didn’t look up.” LeFebre’s battermate, Forgetta, got out of a jam in the fifth inning with two runners on and one out before giving up a scratch run in the seventh inning. “The one thing I told the girls on the bus was to have fun today,” said Coach Smith, whose team improved to 21-3. “We were a little tight at times against Westford. We hadn’t any experience with them. We played this Medford team in the state tourney last year (and won). We were very comfortable. Honestly, we had a lot of fun today.” The North champs will play Div. 1 South powerhouse Silver Lake on Tuesday at Taunton High under the lights at 7 p.m. “It’s one game at a time,” said LeFebre. “We aren’t thinking about anything other than this game. Billerica scored the winning run on a walk in the bottom of the ninth to beat Methuen 3-2. Hard-luck loser Kayleigh Forgetta scattered six hits and fanned seven over the nine innings.

Methuen's softball team dropped its first game of the season, 6-1 at Chelmsford. Heather McLaughlin had two hits and an RBI for the Rangers (15-1).

Kat LeFebre had a big day for Methuen, going 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs, including a double and a two-run home run, to help lead the Rangers to a 10-1 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury. Methuen is now a perfect 15-0 on the season.

LAWRENCE — If you're looking for a blueprint to softball success, check out this year's squad at Methuen. Yesterday afternoon, the Rangers once again displayed the efficiency required to stay perfect on the season: good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting.

Utilizing those basics Methuen rode off with a 3-0 Merrimack Valley Conference victory over Central Catholic. It was the fifth shutout posted by the Rangers in 14 outings, the seventh time they allowed one run or fewer and the 11th allowing two or fewer.

"I looked at our team last year (that went 17-5), and you could see the potential," said winning pitcher Kayleigh Forgetta, who ran her record to 13-0. "The fact we've actually pushed through and gotten here is amazing. I really couldn't have pictured it any better for my senior season."

While Forgetta and her mates were holding off the Central attack, Maddie Adames was ensuring the effort would hold up.

After being called out on strikes her first time through the order, the senior second baseman gave Methuen a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a single that drove in Kelly Blackwell, who had walked. Adames supplied breathing space in the sixth, blasting a double to the right-field alley that plated Kat LeFebre, who had singled, and Nina Correia, who reached via fielder's choice. Those were the only two innings the Rangers had more than one batter reach base.

"It's tough striking out your first at bat, but you just have to come back strong the second time," Adames said. "The (third) time up, I just wanted to get another hit and help us score. I was just looking for a little hit, not a big one. Being ahead (3-0) is a different ball game."

The Ranger defense came through early and often with double plays the first two innings. With none out in the first, third baseman Blackwell started Methuen's first one on a line drive. Right fielder Amanda Conway came up big with none out and the bases loaded in the second, catching a fly then nailing Karoline Leavitt at the plate. Blackwell ended the threat, snagging another line drive.

Center fielder Coralie Mathieu made every out on fly balls in the fourth, including the final two with the bases loaded once again.

Conway also ended the game on a diving catch with a runner on first.

"We have such a solid defense behind me," said Forgetta, who struck out two and walked one. "I have no doubt in my mind every time I pitch the ball that whatever hit it's going to be, that (the defense) is going to get it. They are absolutely amazing behind me. It's a lot of relief."

Central also played to season form as the Raiders (5-8) stranded eight runners. Leavitt went 3 for 3, but besides being thrown out at home also was left at third in the fourth. Leadoff batter Hailey Cockroft also rapped a couple singles.

"I would say that today was very typical of the season," CC coach Stacy Ciccolo said. "I think we have just not been able to produce when we need to. We've tried multiple combinations in the batting order, and we just can't get kids to buckle down and produce when we have runners in scoring position."

Methuen at 12-0 has one of the state's best records. Yesterday it was a 7-4 decision over Tewksbury. Coralie Mathieu scored twice and drove in three runs and Madison Adames added two hits and two RBIs.

Kayleigh Forgetta retired the side in six of seven innings and fired a one-hitter as Methuen remained unbeaten (11-0) with a 2-1 victory over Chelmsford. She also helped her own cause with an RBI triple. 

Third baseman Kelly Blackwell turned a double-play to end Lowell's three-run seventh then slapped a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame. Methuen's 4-3 win over Lowell hiked its record to 10-0.
