Methuen snaps title drought

METHUEN, Mass. — It was mission accomplished for standout pitcher Sarra Bergeron and the rest of the Methuen seniors last night.

The Rangers have enjoyed fine seasons the last three years, winning 16 games each of the last two years, but the Methuen Invitational Tournament title had always eluded them. Last night, they made certain that the void would be filled, cruising to an 8-1 victory over North Andover at the Burnham Road softball complex.

Ranger rebound

Methuen's softball team, which struggled last week, whipped a strong Chelmsford club 15-0 in six innings on Senior Night to improve to 13-5 entering the Methuen Tournament this weekend. Rebecca Armstrong was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and winning pitcher Sarra Bergeron, who threw a three-hitter, was also 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Abbey Carbonneau was 3 for 4 and scored twice.

Threes are wild for Armstrong

Rebecca Armstrong went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as Methuen narrowly defeated Billerica, 3-2. Armstrong's biggest hit came in the second inning when she smacked a two-RBI single to stake the Rangers to a 3-1 lead. Sarra Bergeron gave up just one earned run while fanning eight to improve to 11-4.

Ranger power

Methuen's softball team blasted three solo home runs and added two truples in a nine-inng 9-6 win at Everett. Hitting the roundtrippers were Becca Armstrong, Becca Caterino and Bryanna Giorgio and Abbey Carbonneau (3 for 40 helped out by knocking home the tying run in the seventh and scoring the eventual game-winner in the ninth. Sophomore Carissa Cicolini got the win in her first varsity start.

Methuen battled through a tough defensive day with a late offensive surge to get past Andover, 5-2. Sophomore Becca Caterino provided the productive at-bats for the Rangers (9-3) as a third-inning ground-out scored a run, a single in the fifth tied the game, and a base hit in the sixth yielded a big insurance tally. Paige Fleming pitched in with a perfect 3-for-3 effort including a double and a walk. For the Golden Warriors (5-9), Jeanette Doucette thrived at the top of the order with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Deserved better fate

Sarra Bergeron and Methuen lost a heartbreaker to Tewksbury, 1-0, when a two-base throwing error gave the Redmen their only run in the seventh. Bergeron allowed just four hits and struck out  14 in the battle for first place in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Lauren Decredico also gave up four hits to pick up the win.
