The Central Catholic softball team went a long way to honoring late team member Becca Solomon, a senior outfielder who died in an automobile accident last week, with yesterday’s big 7-1 victory over Bedford in the first round of the Division 2 North playoffs.

The tragic death of senior Central Catholic senior softball player Rebecca Solomon forced the postponement of all Raiders sporting events yesterday. Athletic director Peter Paladino believes that most Central teams will resume play today. The softball team will need to make up yesterday’s game with Tewksbury and today’s scheduled game with Arlington Catholic by Monday.

Central Catholic sophomore Meg Donegan took a perfect game into the seventh inning for the second time this year, but had to settle for a two-hitter in a 5-0 win at Haverhill. Leadoff hitter Briana Martin was 2 for 2 and scored twice for the surging Raiders (12-4) and Carla Borrelli (3 for 3) remained hot and knocked in two runs.

Central Catholic freshman pitcher Kayla Maloney was impressive in her first varsity start in an 8-2 win over Lawrence. She pitched a nifty three-hitter, striking out 13 and walking just one as the Raiders qualified for the tournament by improving to 10-3. She also had two hits, including a home run, to lift her average over .400.

LAWRENCE — Batters can expect a lot when they step up against Methuen pitcher Sarra Bergeron, but there’s something they’ll never have to look for — a fastball.

Central Catholic sophomore Meg Donegan had a perfect game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh at Chelmsford before a bloop single ruined a tremendous performance. That turned out to be the only baserunner against Donegan, who struck out six, in Central's 6-1 victory. Kayla Maloney had a home run for the Raiders and Donegan also had an RBI ands scored a run.

Tina Eringis remained hot, going 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored and Liz Habib went the distance, striking out 12, for the win.

Freshman Kayla Maloney slugged her first career homer — a bomb to dead center — to lead Central Catholic in a 9-1 win over Andover. Winning pitcher Liz Habib gave up one hit and struck out six batters over five strong innings.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Central Catholic pushed one run across and loaded the bases with two outs before falling short of Dracur, 4-3. Erin Swarbrick had two RBIs and Tina Eringis had two hits and scored twice for the Raiders.
