Some of them even fly.

A variety of talents help the Bishop Fenwick High School cheerleaders inspire those onfield Crusaders. "A lot of the girls tumble," explained coach Colleen Richards. "Some of the girls like to fly."

Which means they take the high ground in human pyramids and even -- from time to time -- get tossed in the air. It's the sort of talent that not only supports the football team at every game -- "And every time they score the girls do push-ups," said Richards -- but it may earn the team a place in statewide competition.

"We're practicing now to qualify," said Richards. "It's a lot of work. ... And we have a good time. They love it."

Up to 20 "really talented" girls are on the squad at any one time. Fenwick also has freshmen and junior varsity squads. It's a prestigious duty. But during the school year cheerleaders come and go as some play sports themselves and have to devote themselves to that.
