Coming off a magical 2013 season that saw Phillips go unbeaten and won the Etter Bowl, the Big Blue opened 2014 on a sour note, falling to Loomis Chaffee 13-0 on Saturday.

"Our defense played with a lot of courage and played an excellent game," said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. "But they were on the field the whole game. Our offense struggled and made it tough on our defense."

After holding Loomis scoreless in the first half, Phillips allowed single scores in the third and fourth to suffer their first loss since 2012.

Middle linebacker Dan Wagner led the Phillips defense with 10 tackles, while

Max Anthony 11 tackles Max Anthony added a team-high 11 tackles and Brendon Misterman made 10 stops of his own.

"Our defense stood strong, but we have to make some changes before we will be ready for next week," said Modeste. "The defense spent too much time inside the 20, and we have to be able to give them more help offensively."
