BYFIELD — One year after Governor's handed Brooks its first loss and snapped a four-game winning streak, the Big Blue made amends on one of the most successful prep school programs in New England.
Jaylen Martinez scored the only touchdown Brooks needed in the third quarter and a tough defense made Kyle Sherman's extra point stand in a 7-6 victory yesterday, defeating Governor's for the first time since 2008. Governor's, which had won at least a share of the ISL title in each of the past four seasons, had won 38 of its previous 41 entering yesterday's match.
"We had talked a lot about what it would take to beat them," Brooks coach Patrick Foley said. "They are a team that plays hard and physical every snap, and we needed to rise to that challenge. Today the kids did that, and they did it for the entire game."
A scoreless first half led to Brooks' only scoring possession in the third quarter which Martinez capped on a 5-yard run. The Methuen resident finished with a team-high 83 yards on 24 carries.
"Every snap mattered," Foley said. "Our defense kept us in the game with the way they were playing, but we were confident that we would eventually get something going offensively if we kept playing defense the way we were."
Governor's attempted to pull even in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard Cameron Marci run, but the defense once again came up big stopping the run attempt on the conversion.
