HAVERHILL — With the score tied and five seconds on the clock, Haverhill put the ball in its best player's hands and watched him deliver.
Navin Cruz scored on a driving lay-up at the buzzer to help the Hillies beat Central Catholic in a 57-55 home thriller. The win broke a 19-game losing streak to the Raiders, and gave the Hillies a signiture win going into the home stretch of the season.
"This was awesome," said first-year coach Souleymane Wane. "This was one of the best games of the season for us, I thought the Lowell win was awesome but this is way up there."
The game was close throughout, with the score tied at 25-25 at halftime and Central leading 40-39 at the end of the third. Cruz finished with a team-high 16 points, and Avery Cerow added 13 points including three 3-pointers.
The win was Haverhill's first over Central since 2004-05, with the last win coming by a 64-50 score with Robin Santos leading the Hillies with 21 points and Raishawn Gooding with 15.
