Haverhill got 31 points from Navin Cruz, but it wasn't enough as the Hillies fell to Somerville 63-61 to end the team's postseason hopes. Haverhill, who lost their last three straight, end the year 9-11 and miss the tournament by one game.

It all comes down to Wednesday's home game against Somerville for the Haverhill boys basketball squad if the Hillies hope to make the postseason. Needing just one more win to qualify, Haverhill (9-9) lost to Malden 65-55. Wednesday's tip is 7 p.m.

Alex Rivera scored 26 points as Lowell beat Haverhill 70-53. Avery Cerow had four 3-pointers and 20 points for the Hillies, who have to win one of their final two games to make the postseason.

Methuen kept itself in the MVC Large title hunt with a 59-52 win over Haverhill. Kevin Fernandez scored 28 points, and Andrew Marcelino had 22 points with 12 free throws. Methuen can clinch a share of the MVC Large with a win over Central Catholic on Thursday and a loss by Lowell over one of its last two league games.

HAVERHILL — With the score tied and five seconds on the clock, Haverhill put the ball in its best player's hands and watched him deliver.

Navin Cruz scored on a driving lay-up at the buzzer to help the Hillies beat Central Catholic in a 57-55 home thriller. The win broke a 19-game losing streak to the Raiders, and gave the Hillies a signiture win going into the home stretch of the season. 

Haverhill's Navin Cruz went off for 38 points to lead the Hillies to a 67-57 win over Tewksbury. That is the most points scored by a local player in a single game this season.

Andrew Marcelino erupted for 24 points as Methuen earned its fifth straight victory with a 73-53 win over Haverhill.

Not only did Jake McElroy lead North Andover with 16 points, he also held Haverhill's Joey Fenderson scoreless in a 63-45 Knights victory.

Haverhill scored its biggest win of the season Friday, upsetting MVC powerhouse Lowell 59-54. Joey Fenderson made six 3-pointers en route to a team-high 20 points and Navin Cruz had 16 points.

Haverhill boys basketball beat Billerica 71-52 to give first-year coach Souleymane Wane his first win as head coach. Navin Cruz scored 24 points and Joey Fenderson added 13.
