Lupoli has DeOssie-esque opener for Phillips

WINDSOR, Conn — Phillips coach Leon Modeste may not remember the year, but he remembers the game.

He certainly remembers the player.

That player was Phillips great Zak DeOssie of North Andover, who is currently in his 13th year with the New York Giants. In the opening game of DeOssie's final year at Phillips, he had four TDs and a pick-6 against Loomis Chaffee.

It was a game Modeste won't ever forget.

But after Saturday, DeOssie may have some company.

Postgrad Sal Lupoli of Chelmsford made an impression to remember. At Loomis, even wearing DeOssie's old No. 21, Lupoli rushed for 205 yards and three TDs, made 14 tackles and had a pick-6 as Phillips earned a season-opening 37-13 win.

"Phenomenal," said Modeste. "The last guy who had an opening day like that, and wore No. 21, was Zak DeOssie.

"Sal is everything that was advertised and more."

Phillips (1-0) actually led 14-0 before a crazy fourth quarter started.

Lupoli started the quarter with his pick-6, making it 21-0, but Loomis came back with a touchdown. Loomis tried for an onside kick, but it was recovered by Tylon Crump who returned it 50 yards for a score.

Loomis drove down and scored again, but Jake Bedell pick up a PAT that was blocked by Haverhill's Thomas McAndrew and returned it 90 yards for a two-point conversion for Phillips. 

Lupoli ended a crazy quarter when he burst through the middle to score a22-yard TD.

Junior quarterback Michael Thompson of Andover wasn't asked to do much, but he was a perfect 5-for-5 on PATs.

Phillips hosts the Salisbury School Saturday at 2 p.m.
