Greenleaf leads Windham to state title

Defending individual state champion Connor Greenleaf shot a one-over-par 73 at Beaver Meadow Golf Course in Concord to lead Windham golf to this year's Division 2 state championship. Greenleaf, who usually shoots a two-under-par, actually shot a 64 on the same course a couple weeks ago. So yesterday wasn't his best but good enough to earn the Day 1 medalist spot.   "He started out not so good," Windham coach Ken Bourassa said. "His putting was not as good as it usually is. He bogeyed a couple holes on the front nine." But Greenleaf was stellar on the back nine. As a team, the Jaguars shot a 395. St. Thomas was the Division 2 runner-up, shooting 407. Team scores are finalized on the first day. The second day of play will be tomorrow and it determines the division's best individual golfer. The top 24 players from the first day made the cut.   Greenleaf is three shots ahead of the Day 1 second-place finisher, who is from Portsmouth. "He usually plays better on the second day," Bourassa said. That certainly was the case last year when Greenleaf prevailed despite entering the second four shots behind three other golfers. "He was on fire," Bourassa said about Greenleaf's second-day effort last year. "The kid is good. He's really good." James McKee (78), Adam Dolan (80), Patrick Higgins (81), Matt Howard (83) and Eric Butler (83) all advanced to the second round. Butler is Windham's No. 8 player, so Windham's depth certainly came into play yesterday. "Connor can't do it alone," Bourassa said. "We have great scorers."
