HAVERHILL — An Opening Day that felt like it would never get here finally arrived — thanks, of course, to Trinity Stadium's artificial FieldTurf.
Haverhill's Matt Fenderson and North Andover's Evan Glew pitched the opener like they wouldn't get another chance.
The two hooked up for 90 minutes of strikes, outs and defense. And in the end, Glew got just enough support to slide past Fenderson and the Hillies, 1-0.
"The second half of last year, game after game, he did it for us," said North Andover coach Todd Dulin of the senior Glew. "He's tough, so mentally tough. He's the man. We'll ride him."
Taking up right where he left off last year (5-3, 2.33 ERA), the North Andover lefty carried a no-hitter into the seventh when Pat Yale's clean one-out single to left spoiled the gem.
No matter, though. Glew buckled down and got the next hitter on a one-hop shot to short that Brian Varoutsos spun into the game-ending double-play.
"I had a good rhythm, and (Catcher Chris) Bosco called a great game," said Glew. "I was feeling good out there."
Glew, who fanned eight and walked a pair, had to be that good. Fenderson went the route for the Hillies, and he struck out 12 in a four-hitter with a pair of free passes.
Yes, the hitters are behind at this time of the year, but the mound mastery has to bode well for both teams as the season plods forward.
Playing on the carpet among the large white snow banks dotted with black rubber pellets (think vanilla with jimmies), North Andover got all the runs Glew would need in the third inning.
Chris Keane reached on a two-base infield error and raced home on Brendan Parisotto's base hit for the lone run.
"Their kid pitched a great game. He kept us off balance and we didn't adjust," said Dulin.
For the Knights, who hope to host Andover on Monday, Chris Bosco slapped a pair of hits. Mitch McQuate had the other.
Haverhill will host Methuen here on the hottest piece of property in the Valley this spring, at 7 p.m.
"Haverhill's lucky to have this place, that's for sure," added Dulin. "We haven't been outside. They've been here for weeks. But I'll be out on our field Sunday and battle it, doing anything we can to try and make it ready for Andover."
