Hillies, Rangers notch much-needed shutouts

HAVERHILL —  After losing four straight, three Haverhill seniors decided that enough was enough Monday afternoon.
And Methuen, which had lost four of its first five, concluded that it was time to turn things around.
Both Merrimack Valley Conference teams responded with shutouts, the Hillies clipping Central Catholic and Methuen outlasting Tewksbury 1-0 in eight innings.
Suffering through a four-game losing streak, seniors Matt Fenderson, Sean Doherty and Albert Maldonado all had big games for Haverhill.
Fenderson threw a complete-game five-hitter, striking out two, Doherty was immense at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a triple, home run and four runs scored and Maldonado chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.
The Hillies scored once in the second and then got four big insurance runs in the fourth before adding single runs in the fifth and seventh.
For Methuen, Jacob Wallace was brilliant with a complete-game 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk. He pitched out of first-and-third with one out jams in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, leadoff hitter Nick Comerford was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Shane Godek's single to left to give the Rangers their 1-0 win.
