The scoring drought may be over for the Masconomet hockey team. The Chieftains hope so, anyway.

A.J. Rothwell scored with just three seconds left in the opening period and that seemed to jump start Masconomet, which rolled to a 5-0 win over Everett in a non-league contest last night. Masconomet improved to 3-3.

"We haven't been scoring enough goals," said Masco coach Bill Blackwell. "But after we got the first one late in the first period, we didn't struggle as much. We were doing a lot of the right things."

Andrew Roach (unassisted) and Chris Haines stretched Masco's lead to 3-0 in the second period and Cam Greeley and Rothwell each added a goal in the third to put it out of reach. Chieftains goalie Mike DiGiorgio finished with 13 saves.

am preparing scouting reports on a number of team in New England and I was in the area to watch a few games and a few players. This weeks assignment was to watch the chieftains of Masconomet.. I was nt that high on them as a team last year as i they survived with out solid systems and no real strategy employed but rather on the individual play of some superior players. By my count they lost 4 top players who were not due to graduate, This years team exposes the weakness noted last year as the team is lost. It appears that the team has no faith in the goal tending, which is weak and good for a couple of soft ones each game. I don't know if the current player is the backup or if they don't have a viable backup but the goal tending is the weakest in the league. It seems that the team get by with 10 players as they over play the top two lines and just 4 defense. the team is small and needs to be in a motion based offense but they don't skate, don't cycle and have not offense except for the random individual play.In one game the team was down late and the players let it all hang out and played instinctively, the skated with passion and moved to the net. I have no history with the coach bt the players either have no confidence or are playing in fear of messing up. I noted several occasions where the changesups left tired players on the ice, especially in power play situations, which lead to short handed opportunities and no offense pressure by the unit. Shift length is erratic again leaving tired players little time to recover. Of few players stick out m but mostly for dumb penalties and lack of skating ability , lack of movement leaves smaller players stationary resulting in hits unnecessarily absorbed. These are my games notes which will be used in an article which will be submitted for HNIB.
